Can I service the bike myself?
Motorcycle maintenance is designed for the rider to do the work as well as a bike shop. If you decide to maintain the bike make sure you always check the manufacturer's guidelines. However, a dealer like KickStart utilises technicians with years of technical experience. Be aware of warranty implications.
How expensive is it to service my bike?
The costs involved in maintaining a bike compared to a car are generally a lot cheaper. That is, if you as the owner take regular care of your bike. Servicing is cheaper, as well as the running costs of the bike (such as fuel consumption). There are typically less parts on the bike than on a car that need replacing as general maintenance.
How often do I need to get my bike serviced?
The manufacturer's service schedule will state the intervals you need to have the bike serviced by KickStart. Depending on the manufacturer, intervals can be different. As a rough guide, some manufacturers have intervals of every 4,000kms or so, depending on the bike, including a short interval just after you purchase the bike.
There are some checks that may not be included above. Although as much care has been taken as possible in KickStart's safety tips, they should be used only as suggestive guidelines and are not intended in any way to be relied upon in place of government regulation, manufacturer's directions, or the guidance of professional organisations, such as Stay Upright.
You can find more tips and information in the NSW RTA's Rider's Handbook.
