What makes me eligible to get a motorcycle learner licence in the ACT?
You must:
- be at least 16 years and 9 months of age;
- hold a current (not disqualified or suspended) drivers licence. If you hold an interstate drivers licence you must be an ACT resident and be prepared to convert it to an ACT drivers licence. If you do not hold a licence at all, you must complete the Road Ready Learner Licence Course and pass the road rules knowledge test.
- book and undertake a 9 hour Learner course through Stay Upright.
I live in the ACT and I don't have my rider's licence yet. Where do I start?
You must have a motorcycle licence to ride any motorcycle in the ACT.
To do this, you need to call or contact Stay Upright Motorcycle Techniques on 6241 3963 and book yourself in to their regular Pre-Learner training courses. This is a comprehensive, nine hour course held over two half days. It is a fantastic practical and theoretical course designed even for those who have absolutely no motorcycle riding knowledge. It's always wise to let Stay Upright know if you have no experience with motorbikes when you book in.
Once you have demonstrated to the instructors you are competent according to the syllabus, you will be presented with a competency certificate. You can then take that certificate to any ACT Government shopfront within 3 months. For a fee, you will then get your licence!
Whilst riding on your ACT L's you must:
- Display "L" plates at the rear of the motorcycle,
- Not carry a pillion passenger,
- Not ride a motorcycle with a power to weight ratio exceeding 150kw per tonne. KickStart's bikes do not exceed this rule!
- Not have a blood alcohol level exceeding 0.02% for ACT riders,
- Not tow a trailer,
- Not exceed posted speed limits
- ACT Learners must not exceed posted speed limits. (ACT learners can go above 80kph if it is legally posted).
Things to remember...
- If riding within the ACT, ACT learners can go above 80kph if it is legally posted.
- ACT learners, when riding in NSW, must NOT go above 80kph even if the posted limit is higher than that. Eg/ 100kph.
How long will my L's last as an ACT rider?
From the time you are issued with your L's they will last for up to 2 years. But it's better to get on your P's well before then.
