What makes me eligible to get a motorcycle learner licence in NSW?
- Be at least 16 years and 9 months of age;
- Reside in NSW.
- Undertake a Learner course near you (exceptions apply, read below).
You can get your L's even if you don't have a driver's licence in NSW.
I live in NSW and I don't have my rider's licence yet. Where do I start?
To ride any motorcycle in NSW you must have a motorcycle licence. If you don't have a licence yet, you need to complete the RTA's Motorcycle Rider Training Scheme.
If you live in an area near a Training Centre, you must attend and satisfactorily complete the rider training and testing in order to get your NSW L's. These areas are called "Declared areas". If you're not in the Declared area, you don't have to do this course, but must complete the steps below. It is advisable to try and do the RTA Pre-Learner Course at Stay Upright course, anyway.
The course for NSW Stay Upright involves seven hours of training held over two days at the chosen centre. You must call or contact RTA on 132 213 and book through them for the RTA Pre-Learner Course at Stay Upright.
Once you have successfully completed the course, you will be issued with a Certificate of Competence, which is valid for 3 months after issue. Take this Certificate to your RTA motor registry, complete the eye and knowledge tests, and get your license!
If you don't live in a Declared area, go to the nearest motor registry and:
- Take proof of identity documents;
- Complete an application form;
- Pass an eyesight test;
- Pass the knowledge test; and,
- Pay the licence fee.
- You will then be issued with a learner rider licence.
Whilst riding on your NSW L's you must:
- Display "L" plates at the rear of the motorcycle,
- Not carry a pillion passenger,
- Not ride a motorcycle with a power to weight ratio exceeding 150kw per tonne. KickStart's bikes do not exceed this rule!
- At all times have a blood alcohol limit of 0.00%,
- Not tow a trailer,
Things to remember...
NSW Learners must not exceed 80kph and must observe all lower posted speed limits
How long do my L's last as a NSW rider?
From the time you are issued with your L's they will last for up to 12 months.
