ACT

When can I get on to my Provisional Licence in the ACT?

You must be at least 17 years old and have held your Learner Licence for at least three months before you can obtain a Provisional Licence.

How do I get my ACT Provisional Licence?

You must pass a rider assessment (MOST), which is provided by Stay Upright Motorcycle Techniques, telephone (02) 6241 3963. This is a series of exercises that make up the Motorcycle Operator's Skills Test (MOST). ACT and NSW tests are very similar.

Be careful not to let your L's expire! You won't be reminded when the time nears.

The MOST is a brief test and involves low-speed riding skills. Make sure you practice before-hand!

If you fail the MOST test don't worry! You are required to do the P course but this is free.

NSW

When can I get on to my Provisional licence in NSW?

You are eligible to get your P's between 3 months and 12 months on your L's, unless you are exempted as a mature rider. In this case you can go for your P's at any point on your L's in NSW.

How do I get my NSW Provisional Licence?

The pre-provisional course is six hours of training followed by the Motorcycle Operator Skill Test (MOST). Testing usually takes about one hour, depending on the number of tests to be conducted. Head to the RTA web site for more information. Be careful not to let your L's expire!

The P Test

Practising for the P test

The Provisional Rider Tests are challenging for a learner rider. You are marked stringently, but with good reason.

KickStart recommends to practice, practice, practice!

The RTA web site has great diagrams of the segments in the MOST test.

On the day, you may be tested on skills such as:

Getting your skills up for the above situations will put you in a good position on the day. But it's more important to safely build up your skills on the road and in traffic situations. Please note, the ACT P test requirements may be different to the NSW MOST. Please contact Stay Upright if you require more information for either ACT or NSW.

How do I get my full license?

In the ACT, Provisional licences are issued for one year. After the provisional period has been completed, you can obtain a full licence by going into an ACT Government Shopfront with your license and pay the fee.

In NSW, after you have held your Provisional Rider Licence for 12 months you can upgrade to a full rider's licence. It is your responsibility to attend a motor registry to have the licence upgraded and a new photo taken. To upgrade, go to your nearest motor registry. Take your Provisional Rider Licence and pay the licence fee.
