Emergencies

Despite following all of the techniques and skills for riding in traffic, some things really can pop out in front of you or happen out of the blue, causing sudden accidents. Kangaroos, falling rocks, and spontaneous actions of other drivers to name a few.
What's important is your own experience, awareness, mental skills, and riding skills to prepare you for when it happens. You may not have much when you're a Learner, but getting out there and improving is a must.
Practicing skills like emergency braking and swerving in controlled environments is vital when it comes to these sudden moments. Heading to Stay Upright for advanced rider courses teaches you these great skills. Clock up your riding hours and take time out now and then to practice these skills. Get feedback from your peers or more experienced riders you can trust.
In emergency situations:
- All those hours of riding experience may affect your immediate reactions in emergencies. How well-developed are your skills?
- Slowing down, even just a little, can cut your stopping distance significantly.
- It takes a lot of time to react and even more time to get your hand and foot on the brakes and actually start braking. Be prepared and be aware.
